Songkran is the Thai New Year, and from 13 to 15 April Bangkok becomes the biggest water fight on the planet.

Nobody stays dry. Nobody wants to.

The water fight

Silom Road is the heart of it.

The road closes to traffic and fills with thousands of people, stages, music and water from every direction.

Khao San Road is wilder and messier, and the backpacker crowd goes hard.

Go in the early afternoon, when the energy is building and the sun is at its hottest.

Everyone is fair game: strangers, kids with buckets, the groom most of all.

Some people dab white clay paste on your face as a blessing. Let them.

Keep the water fight to a few hours, not the whole day.

Groups who stay on the street all afternoon are wrecked by dinner and miss the best party of the week.

The villa pool party

Your villa is where Songkran turns into your own party.

Your own pool, the DJ on, the water guns out, and nobody outside the group.

Party models keep the energy up while the boys dry off and go again.

A chef cooks when you're hungry, and the drinks are already on ice.

This is the part of the day the groom remembers: his own party, on his own terms, in the middle of a city-wide water fight.

Book the wrong villa and the party ends early, with a neighbour on the phone and your deposit gone.

Pick one with a bedroom for everyone, so the group stays together all week.

After dark: the clubs

Songkran doesn't stop when the sun goes down.

The clubs throw their biggest parties of the year, and the whole city is out.

Your VIP section means no queue and your own space, with bottles waiting when you arrive.

VIP models host the section, and the groom gets his moment at midnight.

Dry clothes matter here: clubs won't let you in dripping wet.

We keep a change of clothes in the car, so nobody is turned away.

Taxis vanish during Songkran, and the roads are jammed. Cars wait for you all evening and move the whole group in one go.

Never drive yourself during Songkran: the roads are the busiest and most dangerous of the year.

What to pack, and how to book

Waterproof pouches for phones and cash. Everyone gets one.

Light clothes you don't mind soaking, and shoes you don't care about.

Sunglasses help, because the water comes from every direction. Leave the good watch at the villa.

Don't soak monks, the elderly, or people clearly on their way to work.

Drink water as well as beer: the heat is serious.

Flights and villas for Songkran week go first, so book by January for April.

Most groups do three or four days, with the water fight on day one or two. Pattaya celebrates a few days later, so a two-city trip gets you two water fights.
