The Bangkok Nightlife Guide

This is the Bangkok nightlife guide we wish a group had before it landed: the whole city after dark in one place.

Areas, rooftops, clubs, live music, the go-go streets, the gentlemen's clubs, what closes when, what things cost, and how a group gets between them.

We run nights here for a living, so this is written the way we brief a group rather than the way a travel site writes a list. The venue names on the go-go and club streets come from Bangkok Nightlife's own coverage of them, credited where they appear.

The One Rule That Sets the Whole Night

Most of Bangkok stops serving at one or two in the morning.

Three entertainment zones do not: Ratchadaphisek, RCA and Patpong run to four.

Everything else follows from that. If you want the night to end at four, it has to end in one of those three places, which means the last move of the night has to be planned at the start of it. Groups that do not know this get turned out onto a pavement at two with eleven men and no plan.

The Areas

Sukhumvit is the spine of it. A single long road with the BTS above it, numbered sois either side, and nearly everything a visitor wants inside twenty minutes. Soi 11 is the concentrated version — rooftops, clubs and bars on one street — which is why a first night almost always lands there. Nana Plaza is on Soi 4, Soi Cowboy sits between Asok and Soi 23.

Thonglor and Ekkamai are the smarter, quieter, more expensive version. Cocktail rooms, Japanese bars, better food, stricter doors, fewer tourists. Sois 55 and 63 for anyone reading a map.

RCA (Royal City Avenue) is a single strip of large clubs with a young crowd and a four o'clock licence. Right for a group of twenty that wants volume rather than a view. Our signature venue is here.

Silom and Patpong is the oldest nightlife district in the city — a night market laid over what used to be the whole story. Also four o'clock.

Riverside is the calm one: hotel bars, the boats, and rooftops that look at the river instead of a wall of towers.

Ratchada is where the late half of the night goes when the group is not done at two.

Two areas a night, twenty minutes apart. Three is how a night turns into a taxi tour.

Rooftops

The easiest win in Bangkok and the easiest refusal.

Every group wants one and almost every group nearly loses it at the lift, for two reasons: dress and headcount. Shorts and sandals are refused downstairs, not at the bar. Fifteen men arriving together with no table is a problem the door solves by saying no.

Expect to pay ฿400 to ฿700 for a cocktail in the well-known ones, more at the very top of the range, and expect a minimum spend at a reserved table.

Go at nine. The light is still going, the door is soft, and it puts you in a club at the right time afterwards.

Nightclubs

The big rooms are in Sukhumvit, Thonglor and RCA, and they do not fill until half past eleven.

What a group needs to understand about a Bangkok club is that the floor is not really where you stand — the tables are. A table is floor space with a bottle minimum against it, and the minimum is money you were going to spend anyway.

Nobody publishes those minimums. In practice a VIP zone in a Bangkok nightclub runs ฿30,000 to ฿300,000 depending on the venue and the night, which is why walking in at midnight with twelve men and asking is the most expensive way to find out.

We book the table four weeks out and a host meets the group at the door — a VIP table, held in your name.

Live Music

The most underrated half of Bangkok nightlife, and the part that works best for a mixed group of men who do not all want a nightclub.

Bands start around ten and play until late. Thai bands, international bands, covers you know and rock you do not, and in the better rooms three different bands across one night.

Our signature venue is a live music club with a private half: three bands a night from ten, a stage in the middle of the room rather than at the end, and hosts moving between the tables. Every weekend runs a cosplay theme with the venue's own show troupe between sets — the club the night finishes in.

Go-Go Bars

Three streets, and everything else is a variation.

Nana Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 4 is a three-floor building rather than a street, which makes it the easiest stop for a group — one entrance, one place to stand. Soi Cowboy, between Asok and Soi 23, is the photogenic one: two hundred metres of neon. Patpong in Silom is the oldest and now half market.

Bangkok Nightlife's own list of the fourteen worth naming covers Billboard, Spanky's, Rainbow 5, Angelwitch, Butterflies, Lollipop, Crazy House, Dollhouse, Baccara, Suzie Wong, Cowboy 2, Bada Bing, Kings Castle 1 and Pink Panther — theirs, not ours, and it moves.

How a group should use them: one stop, early, standing, one beer each, forty-five minutes, van waiting. They are public rooms. They are not where fourteen men spend four hours.

Carry cash. Do not photograph anybody. Do not haggle at the rail.

Gentlemen's Clubs, and What the Difference Is

A go-go bar is a room you pass through. A gentlemen's club is a room you stay in.

Seated, table service, live music on the floor and private rooms off it with a door that closes. The show a group is thinking of happens in the room they have taken, for them, rather than in front of everybody.

That is also the honest answer to the strip-club question: the private version is better than the public one, and it is booked in advance rather than found at one in the morning.

At our signature venue the rooms run from ฿3,500 for four men to ฿15,000 for the pool zone that holds a hundred and fifty, for the whole night. Four dedicated party rooms carry a pool table, a DJ and a jacuzzi each; Party Room 4 adds a dance floor. Non-members carry a minimum spend of ฿3,000 a person on food and drink, and the liquor package is ฿20,000 with bottles from ฿6,000. Those are the venue's own figures, confirmed with the venue — the private rooms and what they cost.

The Daytime Half

Bangkok nightlife starts in the afternoon if you let it.

A pool party at a villa from lunchtime, hosts and a sound system, is the single best thing we book for a group that has just landed — nobody has to be charming yet, and the group becomes a group in the water rather than in a queue. A party-allowed villa is from ฿18,500 a night. Our signature venue has its own indoor pool zone with a stage at the end of it, which is the same idea with a roof on.

Then a river charter: three hours on the Chao Phraya, crew and catering, up to sixteen aboard, from ฿48,000, past Wat Arun and ICONSIAM in the last of the light. It finishes at a pier twenty minutes from a club table — a rooftop and a pool day.

Getting Between It All

The van is the night. Not a comfort item.

Three taxis from a rooftop to a club arrive at three different times at three different doors, and one of them goes to the wrong club. A 10-hour VIP van with a driver waiting is from ฿6,500, and over eight men you need two.

Bangkok traffic is the thing first-timers underestimate. Not the heat, not the prices, not the late hours — the traffic. A twenty-minute hop at nine in the evening is fifty minutes at seven — the van that waits.

What a Night Actually Costs

Real numbers, for the group, not per person.

A rooftop round for twelve: ฿6,000 to ฿10,000. A club table minimum: ฿30,000 to ฿300,000 by venue. A private room at the venue: ฿3,500 to ฿15,000 plus the ฿3,000 a person minimum spend. A van for ten hours: from ฿6,500. An eight-hour event host: from ฿7,800. A river charter: from ฿48,000. A villa: from ฿18,500.

Planned end to end, our packages run from ฿100,000 for one night with six to ten men to ฿450,000 for a full week, VAT inside every figure — what a planned night includes. A group of twelve to fourteen usually lands on the mid package, where most groups land.

The Order We Actually Run

Dinner at eight. A rooftop at nine. A club table at eleven. A private room from one.

Change nothing else about your night and change only this, and it will be a better night. Run it backwards — private room first, rooftop at midnight — and you will spend more and remember less.

More than one night in the trip changes the shape again: the pool day, the river, the coast and the finale spread across three or four days rather than stacked into one — three days or a full week.

Where a Group Goes Wrong

The group arrives at a rooftop in shorts.

Nobody books a table, so twelve men drink at a bar in three shifts and four of them end up on the smoking terrace for an hour.

The night is planned in a hotel room at six in the evening by a best man who has never been in the city.

Somebody tries to do Sukhumvit, Thonglor and RCA in one night.

And the last one, the expensive one: fourteen men paying separately at four in the morning, followed by an argument in a lobby the next day. One card holds the room, everybody settles sober.
