VIP is the most worn-out word in this business.

At home it means a rope, a clipboard and a bill with a number on it nobody can explain.

Here it means something specific, and it is worth knowing which parts you are actually paying for.

1. The Table Above the Floor

What it buys: the door, a place to stand, and bottles already on ice.

What it does not buy: privacy. It is somebody else's room and there are other tables in it.

For twelve people this is not a treat, it is the thing that stops the group splitting into four groups of three.

2. The Private Room with a Door

What it buys: a door, your own DJ, your own pool table, soundproof walls.

This is the one non-negotiable on a bachelor trip, and it belongs on the last night.

At the venue we use, the party rooms take up to 30 people each. The published rental starts at ฿3,500, and the big party rooms are ฿10,000 for the night, with the DJ included.

3. Hosts Booked by the Hour

What it buys: the end of negotiating.

Hosts are booked in advance for a number of hours, arriving when you say and leaving when the booking says.

4. The Car That Waits

What it buys: the difference between a trip and a scramble.

A Commuter van is ฿3,500 and an Alphard ฿5,500, each up to eight people, one way or both ways.

It is the least glamorous line on the invoice and the one nobody regrets.

5. The Rooftop Hour, Bought Out

What it buys: the whole skyline and a photograph the groom's wife is allowed to see.

Some rooftops can be taken entirely for a group of 20 or more.

One hour, not three. Then you go down and get on with it.

6. The Suite Instead of a Fourth Club

What it buys: the last two hours of the night, ten minutes from the club instead of forty from a villa.

Drinks, a speaker, hosts if you booked them, and a card game that ends when somebody gives up.

We are not the venue. The venue looks after the venue, and we work for the group who hired us.

What VIP Does Not Mean

It does not mean a discount, and it does not mean the bill goes away.

It does not mean privacy either, unless you booked a room — a table is a reserved corner of a public floor.

And it never means that somebody else is watching the groom. That job stays with the group.

Seven: the rooftop hour, while it is still light enough for photographs.

Eight: the long table, because the speeches only happen when everyone is sitting down.

Eleven: the club table, which is the hour it starts being worth its money.

One: the private room, the door closed, and the end of the night belonging to the group.

A Table Against a Room

A table is cheaper, louder and shared. It is the right answer for eight or ten people who want the room to be busy.

A room is a door, a DJ and a pool table, and it is the right answer for the last night at any size.

Above sixteen people the choice makes itself: a table for sixteen does not exist in most clubs, so the room is the only version that keeps the group together.

The Two Mistakes Groups Make With VIP

The first is buying the table for the whole night. You want it from eleven, not from nine, and the hours before it are cheaper elsewhere.

The second is booking three VIP nights in a row. The second one is good, the third one is a photograph nobody remembers taking.

Two peak nights in four is the honest maximum, and the trip is better for it.
