Where to Take a Bachelor Party in Asia — and Why It Keeps Being Thailand

Nobody searches for a city first.

They search for somewhere the whole group will agree to, that nobody has already done twice, and that will not cost a month's salary before anyone has bought a drink.

So here are the six that come up, what each is actually good at, and the one most groups of twelve end up on.

Bangkok

Good at: nights, private venues, drivers, the last night.

Bangkok is the only city on this list where the whole trip can be booked inside one postcode.

A villa afternoon, a rooftop hour, a boat at sunset and a private room with its own DJ, and none of it more than half an hour from the hotel.

The party rooms at the venue we use take up to 30 people, and the published rental starts at ฿3,500 with the big rooms at ฿10,000 for the night.

Not good at: beaches. There is no beach. The water here is a river.

Fifteen ideas for the days.

Phuket

Good at: the boat day, the villa, the photographs.

Phuket is where the yacht day happens, and a yacht day is the single best afternoon on any stag trip.

It is also a long island with the group spread across it, which means a driver and a plan or a lot of waiting.

Not good at: a four-night nightlife programme. Two nights out is about the honest limit before it repeats itself.

Pattaya

Good at: two hours from Bangkok, and cheaper than all of it.

Pattaya is not a destination in its own right for most groups. It is the second half of a Bangkok trip, driven down on the third morning.

The coast, the yacht, the go-karts, then back.

Not good at: being anybody's first choice. Groups who fly straight into it usually wish they had given Bangkok the first two nights.

Manila

Good at: nightlife that runs late, and English everywhere.

The flights are the problem. From Europe it is a connection, and from Australia it is a shorter one — which is why Australian groups look at it and British groups rarely do.

Not good at: getting twelve people across a city at night. Traffic there makes Bangkok look organised.

Ho Chi Minh City

Good at: cheap, fast, and a change from the obvious.

Rooftops, motorbikes, and a food scene the group will talk about afterwards.

Not good at: private venues for a group of sixteen. The infrastructure for a stag trip of that size is thin, and you will be assembling it from parts.

Tokyo or Seoul

Good at: the trip nobody in the group has done.

Both are superb cities. Both are also three times the cost of Bangkok for the same four nights, and both are built for pairs rather than groups of twelve.

Not good at: a budget the whole group signs off on. Somebody always drops out.

So Why Thailand, Every Time

Because the flight is the only expensive part.

Once you have landed, the villa, the van, the boat, the hosts and the room for the last night all cost less than one night out at home.

And because two of the three things a group wants — the nights and the water — are two hours apart on the same motorway.

Three days, four days, a full week.

What It Costs to Do It Properly

What Groups Ask Us First

Never "which city". It is always one of three questions.

How far is the airport from the hotel. How much is a night out. And whether the group can be in one place with a door on it.

Bangkok answers all three in the same sentence, which is why the shortlist usually ends there.

The Flight Is the Only Expensive Part

From London or Sydney the ticket is the biggest line on anybody's spreadsheet.

Everything after it goes the other way. A villa for the afternoon, a driver who waits all week, a boat at sunset and a private room for the last night together cost less than one table at home.

That is the reason a group of twelve can do four nights here and a weekend in Europe for the same money, and come home with better stories.

When to Go

November to February is the dry, cool half of the year and the easiest to plan around.

March to May is hot, which matters less than people think — the villa afternoon and the river charter are both better in the heat.

Songkran in April and the New Year weeks are the two periods where the villas and the party rooms go first, so those dates need six to eight weeks more notice than the rest of the year.

What Goes Wrong When the Group Picks on Price Alone

They land somewhere cheap, and then spend the trip buying the things that were not there.

Transport becomes four taxis going four directions. The "private venue" turns out to be a corner of a bar. Nobody holds the hours, so the afternoon disappears.

The saving is real for about one day, and then it is gone.

The Four-Night Shape That Works

Night one is the arrival night, and it is deliberately small — a rooftop hour and a long dinner.

Day two is the villa afternoon, then a table after midnight.

Day three is the river charter at six, with the private room after it, or the drive to the coast if the trip runs to five nights.

The last night is the room with the door, the DJ and nobody in it but your group.

Bangkok First, Then the Coast

Groups who want the water as well take Bangkok first and the coast second, never the other way around.

The nights come when everyone is fresh, and the boat day comes when the group needs an easy one.

Two hours on the motorway is the whole price of adding it.
