Go-Go Bar or Gentlemen's Club: Which One for Your Group

Two rooms, two completely different nights, and most groups do not know which one they are asking for.

A go-go bar is public. A gentlemen's club is a room with a door.

For a group of twelve men, that distinction decides how the night ends.

A Go-Go Bar, Plainly

A long narrow room, a stage down the middle, a rail to sit at, and a beer that costs less than a coffee at your hotel.

They are stacked on three streets: Nana Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 4, Soi Cowboy between Asok and Soi 23, and Patpong in Silom. The names a group will see on any list — Billboard, Spanky's, Rainbow 5, Angelwitch, Butterflies, Lollipop, Crazy House, Dollhouse, Baccara, Suzie Wong, Cowboy 2, Bada Bing, Kings Castle, Pink Panther — are all in those three places, and they are all variations on the same room.

That room is fine for forty-five minutes. It is not somewhere fourteen men spend four hours.

There is no table for a group. There is no bill that lands once. Nobody is holding anything in your name, and the bachelor will be separated from his friends by the second round.

A Gentlemen's Club, Plainly

Seated. Table service. Live music on the floor, and private rooms off it with a door you close.

You take the room, the group stays together, the music is yours, and the whole night lands on one tab instead of fourteen card machines at four in the morning.

That is the difference: a go-go bar is a place you pass through, a gentlemen's club is a place you stay.

Is It a Strip Club?

Not in the way an American group means it.

The floor is a club — live band, tables, a crowd. Nobody is performing at the room. What a group has in mind happens in the private room they have taken, for them, with the door shut.

So the honest answer to "where is the best strip club in Bangkok" is: it is not a public room at all. It is a private one, booked in advance, with your group in it.

What Each One Costs

Go-go bar: a beer, a drink for company, a bar fine if anyone leaves with you. Small money, unpredictable, paid in cash at the rail.

A gentlemen's club is the opposite — priced in advance, in writing.

At The PIMP, our signature venue, the private rooms run from ฿3,500 for four men to ฿15,000 for a hundred and fifty for the night. Four dedicated party rooms come with a pool table, a DJ and a jacuzzi. Non-members carry a minimum spend of ฿3,000 a person on food and drink. Those are the venue's own figures, confirmed with the venue, not ours — room by room, the private rooms and what they cost.

The venue also publishes its own bachelor packages — 50-Cents at ฿71,500, Hefner at ฿107,000, Pimp Daddy at ฿232,000 — which is the venue's own bachelor packages.

Which Street, If You Only Do One

Nana Plaza is a three-floor building rather than a street, which makes it the easiest stop for a group: one entrance, one place to stand, and nobody wanders off down a soi. Fourteen men can be in and out in an hour.

Soi Cowboy is the one that photographs well. Two hundred metres of neon, bar after bar, and a crowd that is half tourists holding phones up. Good for fifteen minutes and a group photo, harder to keep a group together in.

Patpong in Silom is the oldest of the three and now half night market. It is the wrong stop for a stag group unless somebody specifically asked for it.

If the group does one, do Nana, early, before the crowd arrives at eleven.

Etiquette, Because It Decides How the Night Goes

The rules are not complicated and they are the same in both rooms.

Do not photograph anyone. Not the staff, not the stage, not the man at the next table. This is the fastest way to get a group of fourteen walked out of a building.

Do not touch anyone who has not invited it. Do not haggle at the rail. Carry cash in a go-go bar, because the card machine will either not exist or not work.

Dress like an adult. Shoes, a shirt with sleeves. A gentlemen's club will seat you in shorts; a rooftop earlier in the same night will not, and you only get dressed once.

And tip. Not extravagantly — but the staff who keep your group's room running for four hours are the reason the night works.

One more, for the best man specifically: decide in advance who is holding the card for the room. A group of twelve arguing about a bill at three in the morning is the only bad ending that is entirely self-inflicted.

Why a Group Needs Both, in This Order

Nobody flies to Bangkok to sit in one room all night.

So we run it as a sequence. One go-go bar stop, early, standing, forty-five minutes, one beer each — the bachelor gets the street, the noise and the story. The van waits outside.

Then the group moves to a private room and stays there. Music, table, host, one bill, until it is over.

Do it the other way round and the night dissolves on a street at one in the morning with four men missing.

What Goes Wrong

Three things, every time.

A group walks into a go-go bar planning to spend the night there, and by the second round it is not a group any more.

Nobody books a private room, so at one in the morning fourteen men try to find one at the door — on a Friday, at the busiest time, with no booking. That is how a night ends in a taxi queue.

Or the group pays fourteen separate times, in cash, at four in the morning, and nobody can tell you afterwards what the night cost.

A held room fixes all three.
